Border checks when entering Denmark

When travelling from Sweden to Denmark across Øresund, you may be stopped by the Danish police for a border check.

The checks are random, which means that not everyone is stopped. However, you must be able to show valid identification and relevant travel documents if requested.

Valid identification for Nordic citizens

As an adult Nordic citizen, you can use:

  • a valid passport
  • a national ID card with photo
  • a valid driving license issued in a Nordic country

A Nordic driving license is usually accepted as valid identification for Nordic citizens. However, we recommend bringing a passport or national ID card if possible.

Please note that ID cards issued by tax agencies, banks or DSB are not accepted as valid identification at the Danish border control.

If you do not have a passport or driving license, you can apply for a Danish national ID card via borger.dk.

Nordic citizens under 18

The same rules apply to Nordic citizens under 18 as to adults when travelling without a parent or guardian.

If you are travelling with a parent or legal guardian, you do not need your own travel documents as long as they can confirm that they are your legal guardian.

If you are an EU/EEA citizen, you must be able to show:

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA, you must carry:

  • a valid passport
  • any required travel documents, such as a visa or residence permit for the Schengen area

School classes travelling to Denmark

Students under the age of 18 travelling to Denmark as part of a school trip do not need to show a passport at the Danish border control.

Instead, the teacher or another adult travelling with the group must provide:

  • a list of all travellers
  • documentation of the purpose of the trip

The required form can be obtained from the Danish Immigration Service or your local police station.
