Border checks when entering Sweden

The Swedish police carry out border checks when entering Sweden. This means that you must be able to show valid identification when travelling from Denmark to Sweden, including if you commute regularly across Øresund.

Valid identification for Nordic citizens

As an adult Nordic citizen, you can use:

  • a valid passport
  • a national ID card with photo
  • a valid driving licence issued in a Nordic country

A Nordic driving licence is usually accepted as valid identification for Nordic citizens. However, we recommend bringing a passport or national ID card if possible.

Please note that you are responsible for proving your citizenship.

If you are an EU/EEA citizen, you must be able to show:

  • a valid passport
  • a valid national ID card

If you hold a residence permit or a Schengen visa, you must also be able to show documentation of your status.

Non-EU/EEA citizens

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA, you must carry a valid passport.

Your passport must:

  • have been issued within the last 10 years
  • be valid for at least three months after your planned departure from Sweden

You may also need a visa depending on your citizenship.

Nordic citizens under 18

Children are also subject to border checks when entering Sweden.

A Nordic citizen under 18 travelling with a parent or guardian does not need their own ID document, as long as the parent or guardian has valid travel documents and can confirm that they are the child’s guardian.

Please note that this exception only applies to Nordic citizens and does not apply if the child is travelling with grandparents.

If you travel from Denmark to Sweden with students as part of a school trip, special documentation rules apply.

The teacher or another responsible adult must provide a list of all participants. The participant list can be downloaded from the Swedish Migration Agency, Migrationsverket.

The same rules apply to associations and other groups travelling to Sweden with minors.

What counts as valid identification?

A valid ID document must contain:

  • a photo of the holder
  • the holder’s full name
  • an identification number or date of birth
  • a serial number
  • the holder’s signature
  • information about the validity period of the ID document
  • information about the authority that issued the ID document

Please note that ID cards issued by tax authorities or banks are not accepted as valid identification, as they do not state the holder’s nationality.

What counts as valid identification may also depend on your citizenship.
