Dental care subsidies

If you work or live in Sweden, you may be entitled to government support for dental care.

The Swedish dental care subsidy system includes a general dental care allowance, a special dental care allowance and high-cost protection for dental treatment. The subsidies are administered by The Swedish Social Insurance Agency, Försäkringskassan.

In some cases, additional regional support may be available for people with long-term illnesses or disabilities who have a particular need for dental care.

Dental treatment and subsidies

Most dentists in Sweden are connected to the national dental care subsidy scheme, whether they work for The Swedish Public Dental Service, Folktandvården, or in private practice.

If you work or live in Sweden, you may be entitled to subsidies for common dental treatments, such as examinations, preventive treatment and fillings. The level of subsidy depends on your age.

Dental clinics set their own prices, so treatment costs can vary. Always ask about the cost before treatment begins.

High-cost protection for dental care

If you have high dental care costs, you may be entitled to support through the Swedish high-cost protection scheme, högkostnadsskydd.

This means that the state covers part of your dental care costs once they exceed a certain amount during a 12-month period.

Your general dental care allowance is deducted before it is calculated whether you qualify for high-cost protection. This means that only the amount you actually pay after the allowance has been deducted counts towards the threshold.
