Checklist: Parental benefit when living in Denmark and working in Sweden
This checklist guides you through the steps to apply for parental benefit and temporary parental benefit from Sweden. You can see which documents you need, when to apply and what to do to protect your entitlement to benefits.
Important: When you contact The Swedish Social Insurance Agency, Försäkringskassan, remember to tell them that you live in Denmark. This will help ensure that you receive the correct information.
Register for Swedish social insurance
Before you can receive parental benefit or temporary parental benefit from Sweden, it must be determined whether you are covered by Swedish social insurance.
Complete the form Information when moving to or working in Sweden. You only need to submit this form the first time you apply for a benefit from The Swedish Social Insurance Agency, Försäkringskassan.
In the form, describe your situation, for example:
- You are pregnant and your due date is [date].
- You have had a child and will start parental leave on [date].
- You are applying for parental benefit or temporary parental benefit from [date].
Attach the following documents:
- A copy of your employment contract or a certificate of employment from your employer.
- If you have a coordination number, a copy of the passport pages showing your personal details. Ask your employer to confirm that the identity in your passport matches your coordination number.
Remember to write your Swedish personal identity number or coordination number on all documents you send to Försäkringskassan.
Apply for parental benefit
You cannot receive parental benefit or temporary parental benefit until a decision has been made about your social insurance status. However, you should still apply for the benefit before the decision has been finalised. You can apply at any time, but no later than the first day you want to receive the benefit.
If you are not registered in Sweden, you may not be able to use Försäkringskassan’s digital services with Mobile BankID. In that case, contact Försäkringskassan and let them know that you want to apply for parental benefit or temporary parental benefit.
When you contact Försäkringskassan, make sure they have your current address.
Submit supporting documents
When you apply for parental benefit for the first time, you must attach:
- A copy of your child’s birth certificate.
- A SINK tax decision from The Swedish Tax Agency, Skatteverket, if you have one. You need a separate SINK decision for each payer. This means that you must have a separate SINK decision for payments from Försäkringskassan. A SINK decision is required for Försäkringskassan to deduct the correct amount of tax from your payments. Please note that a SINK decision is only valid for one calendar year. You therefore need a new decision for each year in which payments are made.
You cannot apply for a coordination number for your child yourself. When you submit your child’s birth certificate, Försäkringskassan will ask Skatteverket to issue a coordination number for your child. The birth certificate must include your child’s full name, date of birth and citizenship.
Skatteverket will contact you if your child’s identity needs to be verified in person. If you cannot attend the appointment or provide valid ID, contact Skatteverket once you receive the letter.
Protect your SGI during parental leave
If you are on full-time parental leave and caring for a child under the age of 1, the following rules apply: To protect your SGI, the income used to calculate your parental benefit, and remain covered by Swedish social insurance, you must take parental benefit at sickness benefit level with at least 1/8 compensation every day of the week.
