Leave and benefits

In Sweden, the right to take leave and the right to receive benefits are governed by different rules. The Swedish Social Insurance Agency, Försäkringskassan, determines whether you are entitled to benefits during your leave.

Parental leave

In Sweden, you are entitled to parental leave for a total of 480 days. You may also be entitled to parental benefits from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, depending on your circumstances.

The leave can be used in different ways, allowing you to spread the days over time and save some for later use.

Study leave

As an employee in Sweden, you may be entitled to take leave to study. The education must follow an approved course or study programme.

To qualify, you must have been employed by your employer for at least six consecutive months, or for a total of 12 months during the past two years.

Your employer may postpone the leave to a later date than the one you requested.
