Checklist - Parental benefit and temporary parental benefit – Living in Denmark and working in Sweden

This checklist is for people living in Denmark and working in Sweden who are entitled to parental benefit (föräldrapenning) or temporary parental benefit (VAB) from Sweden.

1. 

First it needs to be determined if you are covered by social insurance in Sweden. Fill in the form ‘Information when moving to or working in Sweden”. You only need to submit the form the first time you apply for a benefit such as parental benefit or temporary parental benefit from Försäkringskassan to be covered. The easiest way to find and print the form is on the Försäkringskassan’s website, Forsakringskassan.se. In the search box at the top of the website, search for ‘5456’ which is the form number. If you can't find the form, call Øresunddirekt and we will help you find it or have it sent to you. You will have the option to enter other information at the end of the form.

Enter a description that fits your situation, for example:

  • You are pregnant with an estimated due date, enter the date.
  • You have had a baby and will be on parental leave from, enter date
  • You are going on parental leave or requesting temporary parental leave, enter the date

You must attach the following to the form:

  • A copy of your employment contract or a certificate of employment from your employer
  • If you have a coordination number and a copy of the pages of your passport that contain your personal data. Ask your employer to certify on the copy that the identity in your passport matches your coordination number

Always write your social security number or coordination number in the top right-hand corner of all documents you send to Försäkringskassan.

Parental allowance or temporary parental allowance cannot be paid until your social security status has been finalized. However, even if the decision on your social security status has not been finalized, you must apply for the benefits. You can apply whenever you want, but no later than the day you want the benefit.

All digital e-services via mobile bank ID are not available for those who are not registered in Sweden. If you cannot use the digital service, call Försäkringskassan and tell them that you want to apply for parental benefit or temporary parental benefit. When contacting Försäkringskassan, always check that Försäkringskassan has your correct address.

When you fill out the application for parental allowance for the first time, you must attach the following:

  • A copy of the child's birth certificate
  • SINK-tax assessment from the Swedish Tax Agency, if you have one. You need a SINK decision for each payer/employer, and therefore you must have a separate decision with Försäkringskassan as the payer. Please note that your SINK decision is only valid for one calendar year, so you need a new decision for each year in which the payments apply.

With the child's birth certificate, Försäkringskassan will ask the Swedish Tax Agency to create a coordination number for the child. This is not something you can do yourself but must go through Försäkringskassan. The submitted document must contain the child's full name, date of birth and citizenship.

The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) will need to confirm your child’s identity through an in-person visit and valid ID. They will send you a letter about this. Contact Skatteverket once you have received the letter if you cannot attend in person or provide an ID.

The SINK-tax decision is necessary for Försäkringskassan to deduct the correct tax rate for you.

If you are on full-time sick leave and caring for a child under the age of 1, the following rules apply: To protect your SGI (the income on which your parental benefits are based) and your social insurance in Sweden, you must take parental benefit at sickness benefit level (the s-days on the form) with at least 1/8 compensation every day of the week.

In other words, you must take parental benefit at sickness benefit level every day of the week consecutively to protect your SGI and remain socially insured in Sweden.

If you are on full-time sick leave and caring for a child over 1 year old, the following rules apply: To protect your SGI, you must take parental benefit at sickness benefit level for at least 5 full days per week and receive at least 1/8 compensation at sickness benefit level on the remaining days. You can also spread the payment of 5 full days of sickness benefit per week over 7 days. You must therefore take parental benefit at sickness benefit level every day of the week without interruption to protect your SGI and remain insured in Sweden.

Minimum amount of parental benefit for children under the age of one:

If you want to take 5 full days per week, you must also take at least 1/8 of the parental benefit for the remaining 2 days when the child turns 1 year old:

Minimum level days can only be used once 180 sick pay days have been taken for the child.
