Danish border control when traveling from Sweden to Denmark
Temporary border control introduced on the 12th November
The Danish government have introduced temporary border controls between Denmark and Sweden. These controls will be introduced provisionally for six months from November 12th 2019.
Border control will take place intermittently for people traveling by car over the Øresund bridge, by train from Sweden to Denmark, and by the ferry in Rønne, Helsingør, Frederikshavn and Greena. This means that there will be border controls at all border crossings one or several times per week.
At the Danish border control, you are required to present valid identification.
What is required at the Danish border control?
As a Nordic (Danish) citizen:
- A valid passport
- A national ID with picture
- Driving license
A valid driving license issued in a Nordic country is usually sufficent for Nordic citizens, but we would always recommend bringing a passport or national ID-card if you have one.
If you do not have a passport or a driving license, there is information on borger.dk on how to apply for a Danish ID-card.

ID-cards issued by tax agencies, banks or DSB do not count as valid identification at the border control.
The same rules apply for citizens below 18 years as for adults when travling without their parent or guardian. However, if you are traveling with your guardian, you do not need your own travel documents as long as the guardian can confirm that they are the child's guardian.
- A valid passport
- A valid national ID-card
- A valid passport and potentially other travel documents such as a visa or residence permit for the Schengen area.
If you are traveling by train from Sweden to Denmark, you will notice that the Danish police is intermittently conducting border checks onboard the train, or at its final destination. You are required to show valid travel documents at these checks as detailed above. The controls will not take place every day and should not interfere with the train schedule.
If you are traveling by car over the Øresund bridge, the Danish police will intermittently conduct border controls where you are obliged to present valid travel documents. The police might also demand to search your vehicle.
If you are traveling by ferry between Helsingborg and Helsingør, or on another bus route between Sweden and Denmark, border controls will be conducted intermittently on these routes as well. You are required to present valid travel documents as detailed above.
